Trekking in Kerala means grassy peaks, tea ridges and forest trails in the Western Ghats. It also means permits. Most of the good routes are run by the Forest Department or a state corporation, and some open for only a few weeks each year. A plan that ignores this will fall apart at the gate.

This guide sorts the main trails by difficulty and season, explains which need permits, and shows how to fit a trek into a wider Kerala trip. Figures and dates were checked in October 2026. Rules and quotas change, so confirm the current season before you book flights.

If you want the gentler side of Kerala, see our places to visit in Kerala guide. If you want hills without hard walking, the Munnar 2-day itinerary is a better fit.

Chembra Peak: the easiest famous trek

Chembra is the highest peak in Wayanad, at about 2,100 metres. The draw is a heart-shaped lake about 180 metres below the summit. The trail is steep in parts, but it is a day walk, and most fit people can manage it with a guide.

Permits are issued by the Forest Department at the Chembra base office, and the trek is usually run as a guided day package. Numbers are limited, so go early. Start soon after sunrise, carry water and a rain layer, and expect the summit to be cloudy.

Our Wayanad travel guide covers Chembra with Edakkal Caves and Banasura Sagar, and tells you when to go. For a comfortable base, Taj Wayanad Resort and Spa sits above Banasura Lake.

Meesapulimala: the big one near Munnar

At about 2,640 metres, Meesapulimala is the second highest summit in the Western Ghats. It is usually done as a two-day trek, with a night in a camp, and needs prior permission from the Kerala Forest Development Corporation. Guides are required.

This is a real mountain walk, not a stroll. The route crosses tea estates, forest and open grassland, and the final climb is steep. It suits people who already hike on weekends. If you are new to trekking, choose Chembra or Kolukkumalai first.

Kolukkumalai and Top Station: tea country walks

Kolukkumalai sits at about 2,170 metres on the Tamil Nadu border. The trail starts from Kurangani village and ends at a high tea estate. It is one of the most scenic walks in Idukki, and a gentler alternative to Meesapulimala.

Top Station is a ridge in the same region. Walkers often descend from there, with views across the Kottagudi valley, when the mist allows. Neither is a technical trek, but both depend on weather. Start early, and wear shoes with grip.

Agasthyarkoodam: the hardest, and the most restricted

Agasthyarkoodam is about 1,868 metres and sits on the border with Tamil Nadu. Access is controlled tightly by the Forest Department, and the trek is open only during a short window, normally between mid-January and late February. In 2026 the season ran for 29 days and closed on 11 February.

The route starts at Bonacaud forest station. Trekkers leave at about 8:00 am and walk some 16 km to the Athirumala base camp by evening, then climb the peak the next day, using fixed ropes on the steepest sections. Photo ID is checked at the start, and bookings are made online through the Forest Department's portal. Dates are usually announced about a week before the season opens, and slots go quickly.

This is a trek for experienced walkers with good fitness. If it appeals, treat the dates as the first thing you plan, and the rest of your trip as secondary.

Periyar and the forest edge

At Thekkady, treks run inside the tiger reserve under the Forest Department, with armed guides and fixed group sizes. They are guided only, and you cannot walk alone. Our Periyar Tiger Reserve guide explains how the boat trip, the bamboo rafting and the treks compare.

Best time for trekking in Kerala

October to March is the main trekking season. The air is cool, the skies are clearer, and trails are drier. The monsoon, roughly June to September, brings heavy rain, leeches and slippery paths, and some routes close. Mornings are the best time to start, because mist and cloud build later in the day.

What to carry

  • Shoes with real grip, already broken in

  • A light rain jacket, even in the dry season

  • Two litres of water and a snack

  • Sun cover, since the grassy peaks have no shade

  • Leech socks in wet months

  • A photo ID, which is checked on many permit routes

  • A torch or headlamp for early starts

Safety and rules

Treks in Kerala are run under forest rules for good reasons. Stay with your guide, carry out your rubbish, and do not carry banned items. Do not trek if the guide says conditions are unsafe. Nothing here replaces advice from the department or a doctor, and you should have travel insurance that covers hiking.

Fitting a trek into a Kerala trip

Most visitors come for backwaters and beaches. A trek works best as a single morning. Put it on the Munnar or Wayanad leg, keep the day after free, and do not book a flight on the same day. If you are planning a longer route, the Grand Kerala 8-day itinerary shows how we pace hills, backwaters and coast.

Our advice

Choose one trek, not three. Pick Chembra if you want a reliable day out, and Meesapulimala only if you are used to long days on foot. Treat Agasthyarkoodam as a separate project built around a short season. Whatever you choose, check the permit rules close to your dates, because they are the part most likely to change.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit for trekking in Kerala?

For most popular routes, yes. Chembra needs a Forest Department permit, Meesapulimala needs permission from the Kerala Forest Development Corporation, and Agasthyarkoodam needs an online booking. Rules change, so confirm before you travel.

What is the best trek in Kerala for beginners?

Chembra Peak is the most common first trek. It is a long day walk with a guide, a clear trail and a famous heart-shaped lake.

When is the best time for trekking in Kerala?

October to March is the main season. The monsoon months bring rain and leeches, and some trails close. Agasthyarkoodam opens only for a few weeks in January and February.

Can I trek in Kerala without a guide?

On permit routes, no. Guides or forest staff are required for Chembra, Meesapulimala, Agasthyarkoodam and Periyar treks. This is for safety and to protect the forest.

How hard is the Agasthyarkoodam trek?

It is one of the hardest in Kerala. It involves a long first day, a camp, and steep rope sections near the summit. It suits experienced, fit walkers.
