Munnar for couples is about the hotel as much as the hills. The tea slopes are lovely, but you will spend long hours looking at them from a veranda. So the room, the quiet and the walk from your door matter more here than in most places.

This guide helps two people choose where to stay in Munnar, how to spend two days, and which viewpoints are worth an early start. It is about stays and pacing. For a list of romantic activities, see our romantic things to do in Munnar. For a full day-by-day plan, use the Munnar 2-day itinerary.

The idea is simple. Pick one good estate stay, slow down, and go out only at the best hours.

Why the stay matters more than the sights

Munnar's famous stops are easy to list. Tea gardens, a museum, a dam, a viewpoint. Most are busy between about 10:00 am and 4:00 pm, when day trippers arrive from the lowlands. The calm hours are early morning and evening.

If your hotel is on a plantation, you get those hours for free. If it is on the main road, you have to drive to them. This is the single biggest decision in a Munnar trip for two.

Two kinds of romantic stay

A plantation retreat

Windermere Estate is a small, family-run place on a working cardamom plantation. Descriptions from third-party travel sources give it 18 rooms and a hilltop setting at about 1,600 metres. Rooms have a private veranda or balcony, and guests can take plantation walks and sit at a bonfire in the evening. It is simple and comfortable, not five-star. Expect home-cooked meals, a library and a pool, but not a spa or a bar scene.

This suits couples who like to walk, read and be left alone. It is less suited to anyone who wants nightlife or a big resort.

A resort with a spa and a private pool

Scenic, Munnar, IHCL SeleQtions is a newer resort with 55 rooms, set among tea slopes. It has villas with private plunge pools, an outdoor pool and a spa that lists couples' treatment rooms. Its interiors take their theme from the Neelakurinji flower, which blooms about once in twelve years.

This suits couples who want a proper room, a private pool and a spa day. It feels more like a resort than a plantation, and it has more facilities.

Trade-off

Fewer facilities

Less of a working-estate feel

Both are well placed for early starts. For other options, our Munnar tea estate stay guide lists more kinds of stay.

Day 1: arrive and do very little

The road from Kochi climbs through hairpins and takes roughly four to five hours, depending on traffic and stops. Most couples arrive tired. Check in, have tea on your veranda, and stay put.

In the late afternoon, take a short walk on the estate or a nearby lane. Mist often rolls in around dusk, and temperatures drop quickly. Pack a jumper even in the dry months.

If your hotel offers a bonfire evening, say yes. It is one of the simplest pleasures in the hills.

Day 2: the viewpoints, and when to go

Start early. The best light is soon after dawn, and the roads are empty.

  • Top Station: A high ridge on the Kerala and Tamil Nadu border, known for far views on clear mornings. Cloud can hide it completely, so do not promise yourselves a view.

  • Kolukkumalai: A tea estate on a high ridge, about 2,170 metres, reached by a rough jeep track. It is a long morning, and a bumpy one, but the sunrise over the tea is memorable.

  • Mattupetty Dam and lake: A gentler stop, good for a late-afternoon walk or boat ride. It is busy at midday, so go late.

  • Eravikulam National Park: Known for the Nilgiri tahr and open grassland. It closes for part of the year, so confirm dates before you plan around it.

Do not try all four. Pick one early viewpoint and one gentle afternoon stop. Then return and rest.

Take a long lunch. Go back to your room in the middle of the day. It is the one time the hills are crowded, and the veranda is better.

Eating well

Keep it simple. Plantation hotels serve home-style Kerala meals, often with fresh local vegetables, spices and tea grown nearby. Try appam with stew, fish curry if your hotel serves it, and cardamom tea at any hour. Ask your hotel what is in season.

We do not name restaurants unless we know them well. Ask your hotel to arrange a table or a private dinner. Hotels may be able to set up a candlelit dinner, but ask in advance and do not assume.

Getting around

Munnar's roads are steep, narrow and slow. A private car with a driver is the sensible choice. Distances are short on the map and long in time. A 20 km drive can take an hour. We plan the route so you do not double back.

Autos and local taxis exist, but they are best for short hops in town.

Months

Weather

What couples should know

October to February

Cool, clear to misty, the main season

Best views. Cold mornings in December and January

March to May

Warmer, drier

Fewer clouds, but hazier distance

June to September

Heavy rain

Lush, but roads and viewpoints can be hard

For couples, we suggest October to February. Mornings in December and January can be cold, so pack layers. The rains turn the hills a deep green but make walking and viewpoints unreliable.

What is not romantic

  • Traffic and crowds in Munnar town, especially at weekends

  • Cloud that hides a viewpoint on the one morning you planned for it

  • Long drives between sights

  • A busy hotel with a loud common area

Be clear with yourselves about what you want. A quiet estate and a good book often beat a packed itinerary.

Make it a trip

Munnar usually sits between Kochi and Thekkady or Alleppey. Frequently asked questions

How many nights should couples spend in Munnar?

Two nights is the minimum, because the drive up is long. Three nights is better if you want a slow day with no plans at all.

Is Munnar romantic?

It can be, if you stay somewhere quiet and go out at the right hours. Munnar town and the busy viewpoints are not romantic at midday. The estates and the early mornings are.

What is the best month for Munnar for couples?

October to February is the best window, with cool weather and clearer views. December and January are coldest. The monsoon months are green but wet.

Is a plantation stay better than a resort?

It depends. A plantation stay is quieter and more homely. A resort has more facilities, such as a spa and private pools. Choose by what you want your days to feel like.

How long is the drive from Kochi to Munnar?

Roughly four to five hours by road, depending on traffic and stops. Many couples break the journey for a waterfall or a tea stop.
