What it is

The Lotus Temple is a Bahá'í House of Worship, designed by the architect Fariborz Sahba. Its form is a half-opened lotus, built from 27 free-standing marble petals arranged in clusters of three, and surrounded by nine pools.

The building is used for prayer and meditation by people of any religion, and there are no sermons, rituals or clergy.

Timings and the closed day

The temple opens in the morning and closes in the late afternoon, and it is closed every Monday. Times differ in summer and winter, so check them before you plan your visit.

  • Weekdays: the quietest time, especially in the morning.

  • Weekends and holidays: busy, with queues at the entrance.

  • Mondays: closed.

The last entry is usually some time before closing, so aim to arrive well before the end of the day.

What to expect

Visitors queue, leave their shoes at a counter and walk in small groups through the pools to the temple. Inside, there is a large, quiet hall where you can sit in silence. Talking, photography and phone use are not allowed inside the prayer hall.

  • Dress: modest, though no special covering is required.

  • Silence: maintained inside.

  • Security: bags may be checked.

  • Time inside: a few minutes to sit in the hall.

Tips

  1. Go on a weekday morning to avoid the queue.

  2. Leave large bags at the hotel.

  3. Carry a hat and water. The queue is outdoors.

  4. Take photos outside only.

  5. Check the closed day.
