Lake Pichola, Udaipur: Boat Ride, Jag Mandir and the Best Hour to Go
Lake Pichola guide: boat ride timings and fares, Jag Mandir, Jag Niwas and the Lake Palace, sunset slots, sunrise by month and which boat to choose.

Udaipur is a city that looks better from the water. The City Palace rises straight from the lake, the haveli walls follow the shore, and the hills stand behind in layers. From the middle of the lake you can see all of it in one frame.
That is why almost everyone takes a boat. It is also why the wrong boat at the wrong hour can be a disappointment. This guide gives you the facts first, then how to choose between the ride types, and the best time to go.
Figures were checked in October 2026. Fares and timings differ between sources and change with the season, so treat them as ranges and confirm at the jetty.

A short history
The lake is older than the city. It was originally made in the fourteenth century, and it was enlarged after Udai Singh II chose the site for a new Mewar capital in 1559. The palaces, ghats and temples of old Udaipur followed its shore.
The islands were added later as pleasure palaces. They were places for rulers to rest, entertain and watch the sunset over water.

The islands
Island | What it is | Can you land? |
|---|---|---|
Jag Mandir | A palace and gardens on an island, with a restaurant and event spaces | Yes. The official boat stops here |
Jag Niwas | The Lake Palace, now the Taj Lake Palace hotel | Normally only hotel guests and diners |
Smaller islets | Pavilions and gardens | Passed by boat, not landed on |
Jag Mandir
Jag Mandir is the island you can step on. It was built over several reigns in the seventeenth century, and it is the place where Prince Khurram, later Shah Jahan, sheltered in the early 1620s. Some writers link its domed pavilions to the later design of the Taj Mahal. The link is a popular story rather than a proven one.
Today the island has gardens, a fountain courtyard and a restaurant. Allow half an hour to wander.

Jag Niwas and the Lake Palace
The white building floating on the lake is the Lake Palace. It was built in the eighteenth century as a summer palace for the Maharana, and it is now the Taj Lake Palace hotel. Most visitors see it from the boat. If you want to go inside, plan a dinner or a stay, because a casual landing is not normally possible.

The sunset slots sell out first. Sources advise arriving 30 to 40 minutes before sunset, and booking ahead in the peak months. One source reports that the last official tariff it found ran to the end of March 2026, so ask for the current fare.

Midday | Heat and flat light | Avoid, except in winter |
