Kochi to Munnar: Drive Time, Distance and the Best Stops
Kochi to Munnar by road: distance, drive time, the route via Kothamangalam and Adimali, waterfalls and viewpoints worth stopping at, and how to time the day.

Kochi to Munnar is the first big transfer on most Kerala trips, and it is more pleasant than it looks on a map. The road climbs from the coast through rubber, spice and tea country, with waterfalls and viewpoints along the way.
This guide gives the distance and time, the best stops and how to pace the day.

The road up to Munnar.
At a glance | |
|---|---|
Distance | About 130 km from Kochi city; about 110 km from the airport |
Drive time | 3.5 to 4.5 hours without long stops |
Route | Aluva, Kothamangalam, Adimali, then up the ghat road |
Best start | 8 am or earlier |
Road | Good, but the last 40 km climbs through bends |
The route
From Kochi the road heads east through Aluva and Perumbavoor, then climbs through Kothamangalam and Neriamangalam. After Adimali the ghat road begins, with hairpin bends and tea gardens until Munnar. The drive is scenic, but the bends can bother anyone prone to motion sickness. Sit in front and keep the windows open.
Stops worth making
Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls: a series of cascades beside the road, between Neriamangalam and Adimali. They are full from June to December and thin in the dry months.
A tea or spice stop: many roadside shops sell fresh tea and spices. Buy small amounts.
Lakkam waterfalls: a short detour near Munnar.
Photo viewpoints: a few bends above Adimali have wide views.
Athirappilly is on a different road, so it does not fit this route without a long detour. See our Athirappilly guide if you want a separate day.

How to pace the day
Leave Kochi by 8 am to avoid the town traffic.
Stop at the waterfalls mid-morning.
Have lunch on the road, in Kothamangalam or Adimali.
Arrive in Munnar by mid-afternoon, and use the evening to settle in.
The road is slow after dark, and in the rain the ghat section needs extra care. Aim to arrive in daylight.
Taxi, bus or train
Private car with a driver: the most comfortable, and lets you stop where you like.
Bus: frequent buses run from Kochi and Ernakulam, but they are slow and crowded.
Train: no direct line to Munnar. The nearest railheads are Aluva and Ernakulam, so you still need a road transfer.
Where it fits
This is the first leg of the Kerala 5-day itinerary and the 7-day itinerary. For all the main distances, see our driving distance guide. For what to do once you arrive, see the Top Station guide and the Eravikulam guide.
