A boat travelling down a Kerala river lined with dense palm trees

Kerala · 4 Days

Grand Kerala

The three Kerala signatures in four days — colonial Kochi, Munnar tea, an Alleppey houseboat.

Day by Day

4 Days, In Full

Hills and backwaters in one short trip. You start in Fort Kochi, climb to Munnar for the tea country, then drop four thousand feet back down to Alleppey for a night on a private houseboat. It is the most efficient route in Kerala that still feels like a holiday rather than a schedule. The drives do real work here — the descent from Munnar to the delta changes the landscape completely twice over. Best October to March.

Kochi

Arrival in Kochi — Fort Kochi & the Spice Quarter

Your driver meets you at Cochin airport. The road runs out to Fort Kochi, where four centuries of trade left their mark on one small peninsula. Walk the lanes on foot. St Francis Church, the Dutch Cemetery, the godowns of Jew Town still stacked with ginger and pepper. Evening is free for a Kathakali performance if you want one.

Kochi → Munnar

Kochi to Munnar — Into the Western Ghats

The drive up to Munnar takes about four hours and climbs the whole way. Rubber gives way to cardamom, then to tea. Stop at Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls when the monsoon has been kind. By the time you arrive the air is fifteen degrees cooler than Kochi.

Munnar → Alleppey

Munnar to Alleppey — Hills Down to the Water

You lose four thousand feet in four hours. Tea becomes rubber, rubber becomes paddy, and then the road is running beside water on both sides. Your houseboat is waiting at Alleppey. Lunch is served once you are out on the lake.

Alleppey

Alleppey — Sunrise on Vembanad, then Departure

The lake is at its best before seven. Mist lifts off the water. Fishermen work the nets while the light is still soft. Breakfast is served on deck as the boat returns to the jetty. Your driver takes you on to Cochin airport, roughly ninety minutes away.
