About This Journey

Darjeeling & Kalimpong Hills — Premium

Darjeeling and Kalimpong, without Kolkata, for travellers who want West Bengal's hill country and nothing else. Five nights split between the two hill stations — three around Darjeeling's tea gardens and toy train, two in Kalimpong among its monasteries and viewpoints — with no long transfer to the plains eating into the schedule.

The shorter route means more unhurried time at altitude: a genuine tea garden visit, the Tiger Hill sunrise, a full toy train ride through town, and Kalimpong's own quieter monastery hillside before departure. It suits anyone who has already seen Kolkata, or who simply wants the mountains without the city on this trip.

  1. 01

Three nights around Darjeeling's tea gardens

A dedicated stretch in Darjeeling covers the Tiger Hill sunrise, a tea garden visit, and the toy train ride through town — the hill station's essential experiences without a rushed single overnight.

  2. 02

    Kalimpong's monasteries and Deolo Hill

The second half moves to Kalimpong for its own pace — Buddhist monasteries and views from Deolo Hill, a genuinely different hill-station character from Darjeeling's.

  3. 03

    A hills-only pace

With no transfer to Kolkata built into this route, the days stay unhurried — more time at altitude rather than a travel day spent getting to the plains.

4 of your 6days — the full itinerary follows below. Scroll to travel the route.

Day 2 · Darjeeling

Darjeeling — Tiger Hill Sunrise and a Tea Garden

A pre-dawn drive to Tiger Hill for sunrise over Kanchenjunga, with the convoy of jeeps that makes the same trip every clear morning. The return stops at Ghum monastery and the Batasia Loop war memorial. Back in town for a late breakfast, the rest of the morning is Happy Valley Tea Estate, a short walk from the Chowk Bazaar, for the factory tour and a tasting. The afternoon is free for the Mall.

Day 3 · Darjeeling

Darjeeling — the Toy Train and the Town

A ride on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the UNESCO-listed toy train, usually the joy-ride up to Ghum and back with a stop at the Batasia Loop. The rest of the day covers the town itself: the Peace Pagoda on Jalapahar Hill, the Himalayan zoo and mountaineering institute below Observatory Hill, and Chowrasta for the evening. A cable-car ride, when the Darjeeling ropeway is running, adds a different angle over the tea gardens on the slopes below.

Day 4 · Darjeeling → Kalimpong

Darjeeling to Kalimpong

A short drive of about two hours, dropping down toward the Teesta river before climbing again to Kalimpong's ridge. The road passes tea gardens and, in season, the Teesta itself running high and green below the highway. You reach Kalimpong by early afternoon, with time for a first walk around the small Mall and the old market before dinner.

Day 5 · Kalimpong

Kalimpong — Deolo Hill and the Monasteries

A morning drive up to Deolo Hill, the highest point above the town, for its landscaped park and, on a clear day, a Kanchenjunga panorama from a different angle than Darjeeling's own viewpoints. The rest of the day covers Durpin Monastery, consecrated by the Dalai Lama in 1976, and one of the flower nurseries the town is known for, orchids and cacti grown for export since the early twentieth century. The pace is gentle throughout.

Arrive in Darjeeling

The gateway is Bagdogra airport, near Siliguri, about three hours by road up into the hills, or the New Jalpaiguri rail junction a similar distance away. The drive climbs steadily through tea gardens and forest, with the views opening out in the last stretch before town. You settle in by the afternoon. The evening is for the Mall and Chowrasta, Darjeeling's pedestrian square, and a first look at the hills as the light drops.

Kalimpong — Departure

A quiet last morning around the town's small Mall. Bagdogra airport is about an hour and a half away, and New Jalpaiguri's rail junction a similar distance, both reached via Siliguri. It suits a hills-only trip that does not continue on to Kolkata.

Frequently Asked

Before You Book

Does this itinerary include Kolkata?

No — this is a hills-only route, five nights across Darjeeling and Kalimpong. Travellers who want Kolkata as well should look at the longer West Bengal circuits that add the city and, further still, the Sundarbans.

What's the difference between Darjeeling and Kalimpong?

Darjeeling is the better-known tea and toy train hill station; Kalimpong, a short drive further, has its own quieter monastery hillside and viewpoints, with fewer crowds and a different pace.
