Maharashtra — Wine & the Western Ghats

A slow loop through hill station and wine country.

Day by Day

6 Days, In Full

A break from the cities. Two nights in the hills at Lonavala, then two nights in Nashik among the vineyards and the ghats of the Godavari. The roads are short, and the days are unhurried.

Mumbai

Arrive in Mumbai

Your driver meets you at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Mumbai is India's financial capital, and it never really stops. Check in and rest. In the late afternoon, walk the sweep of Marine Drive as the light turns gold. The curve of the bay at dusk is called the Queen's Necklace. Dinner is a first taste of the city's cooking.

Mumbai → Lonavala

Mumbai to Lonavala

A drive of about two hours, roughly 85 km, up through the Sahyadri ghats. Lonavala is a hill station, green and cool in the monsoon. Check in and rest. In the late afternoon, take a gentle walk to a viewpoint above the valley. Evenings here are quiet.

Lonavala

The Lonavala Ghats

A day on the ridge. Viewpoints, lakes and, in the monsoon, waterfalls tumble off the cliffs. Your driver and guide choose the best spots for the season. Between June and September, expect mist and heavy rain. Outside the monsoon, the hills are dry and clear. We confirm what is open before you go.

Lonavala → Nashik

Lonavala to Nashik

A drive of about four hours through the hills and farmland of the Deccan edge. We take a lunch stop on the way. You reach Nashik by afternoon. Walk the Ramkund ghats at dusk, as lamps are lit along the Godavari.

Nashik

Nashik's Vineyards

Nashik is India's wine country. Today you visit a vineyard in the hills above Gangapur Lake for a tour and tasting. Rows of grapes run down to the water. Lunch is among the vines. Pace is unhurried, and a driver stays with you all day. Tasting formats and timings are set by the estate, so we confirm them.

Nashik to Mumbai

The road descends through the Kasara ghat, about four hours to Mumbai. Your driver leaves in good time for your onward flight. We build in a coffee stop on the way.
