The two things most first-time visitors to north India want to see, from a single base. One day covers Delhi, old and new, at a brisk pace. The next is a day trip to Agra for the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, by the Yamuna Expressway or, better, the Gatimaan Express train. You are back in the same Delhi room each night, which suits a short trip or a stopover. Adding Jaipur turns it into the full Golden Triangle.

Arrival in Delhi — Mughal Landmarks
A private airport pickup in Delhi, then a first afternoon among the city's Mughal landmarks. Humayun's Tomb, finished in 1570, was the first great garden tomb built in India. Its design was later echoed in the Taj Mahal. Qutub Minar rises more than 70 metres and dates from the 12th century. It is the tallest brick minaret in the world. Old Delhi adds the Red Fort and the broad steps of the Jama Masjid. The evening is free before the drive to Rajasthan.

Delhi in a Day — Old City & New Capital
A full, fast day across both Delhis for travellers with only one. The morning is Old Delhi: the Jama Masjid, a cycle-rickshaw through Chandni Chowk, and the Raj Ghat memorial. The afternoon is New Delhi: Humayun's Tomb, the Qutub Minar, and a drive down the Kartavya Path past India Gate and the government buildings. It is a lot of ground and a lot of traffic. A private car and guide make it possible.

Day Trip to Agra — The Taj & the Fort, and Back
An early start down the Yamuna Expressway, about two hundred and thirty kilometres and three hours each way. In Agra: the Taj Mahal, then Agra Fort, with a lunch in between. If there is time, a stop at Itimad-ud-Daulah, the Baby Taj, across the river. The drive back gets you to Delhi in the evening. It is a long day, but it is the way to see the Taj without moving hotels. The Gatimaan Express train is a faster, calmer alternative to the car.
