Overview

Gulmarg At A Glance

Gulmarg means meadow of flowers. It sits in the Pir Panjal range, among pine and fir forest above the Kashmir valley. A luxury Gulmarg tour is built around that open, high landscape. The air is cooler than in Srinagar. The views stretch across the mountains. The main attraction is the Gulmarg Gondola. This two-stage cable car climbs from the meadow toward Mount Apharwat. It is often described as one of the highest cable car rides in the world. Check current details with your guide before you plan around it. Winter brings skiing and snowboarding to the slopes of Apharwat. Guided off-piste runs are also part of the picture for experienced skiers. In the warmer months, the meadow is for walking. You can stroll between the trees at an easy pace. You do not need to be a skier to enjoy the place. Your private guide and driver take care of the road from Srinagar and plan the day with you. Gulmarg works well as a day trip or as a longer stay. The itinerary follows your pace. Time is left for a slow lunch and a long look at the mountains.

The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa

★★★★★

The Khyber stands at the edge of the pine forest above Gulmarg, at about 2,690 metres, facing Mount Apharwat. It is built of deodar wood and local stone, in a heavy alpine style, and it is about a kilometre from the Gondola base station. In summer the meadow and the golf course are at the door. In winter the snow comes up to the windows and the ski runs start close by. There are 85 rooms, suites and chalets, most with a fireplace and a mountain view. The spa is run with L'OCCITANE, with heated pools and a hammam. Several restaurants cover Kashmiri, Indian and European food, and a fire-lit lounge runs through the cold months. It is the only true five-star resort in Gulmarg, and the reason many travellers add two nights in the mountains to a Kashmir trip.

Kolahoi Green Heights, Gulmarg

★★★★

Kolahoi Green Heights is a modern four-star hotel in the middle of Gulmarg, about two hundred metres from the Gondola base station. It opened in 2017. The rooms are large and simply done, with wood floors, warm colours and big windows onto the meadow or the pines. There is a restaurant, room service and heating throughout. The location is the strength. The Gondola, the meadow, the church and the golf course are all a short walk, which matters in winter when the snow is deep and cars struggle. It is the premium option in Gulmarg for travellers who want a comfortable, central room rather than a full resort, and it works well for one or two nights in the mountains.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Gulmarg

How many days do you need in Gulmarg?

One full day works as an excursion from Srinagar. That is enough for the meadow and a ride on the Gulmarg Gondola. Stay a night or two if you plan to ski or want to walk at leisure. Your guide can shape the days around your pace and the season.

What should I know before visiting Gulmarg?

It is high and much cooler than Srinagar, so carry warm layers in every season. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip. Sun at altitude can be strong, so pack sun protection. Take it slowly on arrival. Cable car and road operation depend on conditions, so check current details with your guide.

When is the best time of day to ride the Gulmarg Gondola?

Earlier in the day is the common choice. Views are usually clearer before cloud builds in the afternoon, though nothing is guaranteed. Give yourself time at the top and do not rush the return. Check current details with your guide on timings and operation before you set your day.

Can non-skiers enjoy Gulmarg?

Yes. The meadow, the forest edge and the mountain views are there for everyone. You can ride the Gulmarg Gondola, walk at an easy pace, or simply sit with a hot drink. Skiers have the slopes, and other travellers have the landscape. Your guide will plan accordingly.

Are your tours in Gulmarg private?

Yes. Every journey is private. You travel with your own guide and driver, and the pace is yours to set.
