Sonamarg means the meadow of gold. It sits at about 2,800 metres, on the road from Srinagar toward Ladakh, where the Sindh river runs fast and cold through a wide green valley. The peaks here are higher and closer than at Gulmarg or Pahalgam. Glaciers hang in the side valleys. The best known is Thajiwas, a short pony ride or an easy walk from the road, with snow on the ground well into summer. Sonamarg is the last town before the Zoji La pass. It is also a staging point for the Amarnath pilgrimage by the Baltal route. Most travellers come for the day, from Srinagar, about three hours each way. The drive itself is part of the trip, climbing beside the river past pine forest and open pasture. The road is usually open from around April to November. In winter the pass closes and the town all but empties.
