Kovalam Beaches: Lighthouse, Hawa and Samudra Compared
Kovalam's three beaches compared: Lighthouse Beach, Hawa Beach and Samudra Beach. Which to choose, swimming safety, the lighthouse and how to reach it.

Kovalam is a crescent of three beaches near Thiruvananthapuram, divided by rocky headlands. Each beach has a different feel, and picking the right one matters more than the name.
This guide compares Lighthouse Beach, Hawa Beach and Samudra Beach, and explains how to use them.

Lighthouse Beach
This is the main beach and the most popular. It sits under the red and white lighthouse, with cafes, shacks and shops along the sand. The water is calmer than the others, and lifeguards patrol the swimming area.
Best for: a first visit and for swimming.
The lighthouse: open to visitors for a small ticket, with a view over the coast. Check the times on the day.
Hawa Beach
Hawa Beach, also known as Eve's Beach, is broad and lively and a favourite with families. It has more space for a walk, and a steady crowd in the evenings.
Samudra Beach
Samudra is the quieter one, with a rocky shore and some of the better resorts nearby. The sea is rough, so use it for views and walks rather than swimming.

Swimming and safety
The sea can be strong, especially in the monsoon. Swim only in the flagged areas and follow the lifeguards. Take advice from your hotel, and avoid swimming alone.
