Kayaking is one of the quietest ways to see Havelock. You paddle through mangrove channels at low speed, with birds, crabs and the roots of the trees at close range. Some operators also run night kayaking, where the water may glow in the dark under the right conditions.

This guide covers what to expect, how to choose an operator and what is and is not guaranteed.

Daytime mangrove paddling

The daytime trip takes you into sheltered channels lined with mangroves. The water is calm, the paddling is gentle, and the guide points out wildlife and plants. You may see mudskippers, crabs, herons and kingfishers.

  • Best time: the morning, when the air is cool and the tide is right.

  • Fitness: easy, and open to most adults and older children.

  • What to wear: quick-dry clothes, sun protection and a hat.

Night kayaking and glowing water

Some operators offer paddles after dark. In certain conditions, tiny marine organisms light up when the water is disturbed, so the paddle blades leave a faint glow. This is not guaranteed.

  • Dark skies matter. The glow is easiest to see on moonless nights, away from lights.

  • Conditions vary. Rain, cloud, tide and season all affect it, and operators cannot promise a display.

  • Ask first. A good operator will tell you honestly whether conditions are likely to be right.

Treat the paddle as a pleasant night on the water, and any glow as a bonus.

How to choose an operator

  1. Safety kit: life jackets and a trained guide should be standard.

  2. Group size: small groups are quieter and better for wildlife.

  3. Licences: use an operator that holds the proper permits for the area.

  4. Honesty: avoid anyone who promises a guaranteed glow.

  5. Timing: ask about the tide, as it decides the route.

Safety and etiquette

  • Wear the life jacket for the whole trip.

  • Do not touch or break mangrove roots.

  • Keep your voice low.

  • Do not paddle alone.

  • Avoid the water if the weather turns.
