About This Journey

Kerala Monsoon Escape — Luxury

Five nights through Munnar and Thekkady, timed for the season most visitors skip. Kerala's monsoon, roughly June to September, is when its hills are at their most vivid, tea valleys glowing green, waterfalls full, the air washed clean, and it is the traditional season for slowing down.

The route follows the same shape as the standard hills-and-spice trip, Kochi, Munnar's tea estates, Thekkady's spice forest, a dawn boat ride on Periyar Lake, but it is built with the monsoon's realities in mind: fewer crowds, softer rates and a flexible pace around the rain.

  1. 01

    Munnar's valleys at their greenest

The monsoon is when Munnar's tea valleys are most vivid, with mist settling into the hills and far fewer visitors than the December-to-March peak.

  2. 02

A working spice plantation in the rain

Thekkady's cardamom and pepper plantation, at Spice Village - A CGH Earth Experience, is genuinely lovely in the monsoon, when the forest is at its most alive.

  3. 03

    Built-in flexibility around the rain

Days are paced with the monsoon's bursts of rain in mind, rather than a fixed schedule. Boat rides and outdoor walks are timed around the clearer stretches where possible.

  4. 04

    Quieter properties, softer rates

Scenic, Munnar - IHCL SeleQtions and Spice Village are notably quieter in these months, and rates soften compared to the December-to-February peak.

Day 2 · Kochi → Munnar

Kochi to Munnar — Into the Western Ghats

The drive up to Munnar takes about four hours and climbs the whole way. Rubber gives way to cardamom, then to tea. Stop at Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls when the monsoon has been kind. By the time you arrive the air is fifteen degrees cooler than Kochi.

Day 3 · Munnar

Munnar — Tea Estates & the Old Plantation Machinery

Munnar is tea, and has been since the 1880s. Spend the morning walking a working estate with a planter who can explain what you are looking at. The Tata Tea Museum houses the original rollers and a functioning miniature factory. Afternoon at Mattupetty Dam and Echo Point.

A row of tall trees along the crest of a lush green hillside in the Cardamom Hills

Day 4 · Munnar → Thekkady

Munnar to Thekkady — Along the Cardamom Hills

Three and a half hours south through the Cardamom Hills. The road is good and the views are constant. You can smell the plantations before you see them. Thekkady sits on the edge of Periyar Tiger Reserve, so the last stretch runs through genuine forest.

Rows of plantation crops on a hillside field with mountains behind

Day 5 · Thekkady

Thekkady — A Working Spice Plantation

Thekkady grows cardamom, pepper, clove, nutmeg and vanilla, often on the same hillside. A guided walk through a working plantation shows you how each one actually grows, which is rarely what people expect. Buy directly from the estate if you want the good stuff at the real price.

Thekkady — Periyar Lake at Dawn, then Onward

The first boat onto Periyar Lake leaves at half past seven. Dead trees still stand in the water, drowned when the dam went up in 1895, and elephant and sambar come down to drink along the shoreline. Bring a long lens. Afterwards you continue on or head for the airport.

Frequently Asked

Before You Book

Is the monsoon really a good time to visit Kerala's hills?

Yes — the hills are the exception to the coast's heavy monsoon. Munnar and Thekkady stay comfortable, lush and considerably quieter than peak season.

How much rain should we expect?

Rain typically comes in bursts rather than constant downpours, with dry spells between showers. A flexible itinerary, which this route is built around, handles it well.

Will the Periyar boat ride still run?

Yes, boat rides on Periyar Lake run through the monsoon, though the roughest days may see adjusted timings for safety.
