SeaShell Havelock resort grounds shaded by coconut groves along Govind Nagar Beach

Havelock Island, Andaman & Nicobar

SeaShell Havelock

★★★★☆

SeaShell Havelock sits on Govind Nagar Beach, a quieter stretch of Havelock Island's coastline shaded by coconut groves. TripAdvisor has repeatedly rated it a top beach resort in India, and the accolade shows in how the property is run. It is polished without feeling formal, and relaxed without feeling careless. Accommodation spans several distinct categories rather than one repeated room type. Nicobari Cottages are wooden duplexes inspired by traditional Nicobari houses, with a two-storey layout that suits couples wanting something different from a standard room. Andaman Bungalows sit closer to the water, sea-facing, with private sit-outs and a soaking tub in the bathroom. Between these sit Andaman Cottages tucked into the coconut groves, air-conditioned Andaman Chalets under lofty wooden roofs, and Havelock Cabanas with high wooden ceilings and their own balconies. Dining runs across three venues. Bonova Cafe & Pub covers casual all-day eating, White Lotus serves Indian and continental fine dining, and High Tide is an alfresco bar right on the beach for evening drinks as the sun goes down. Sattva Spa handles wellness treatments, and there is a dedicated yoga space for guests who want to start the day with something quieter. Havelock's diving scene sits right at the resort's doorstep. SeaShell runs its own certified dive shop, so booking a reef trip or a beginner's course takes no real planning. Snorkelling, kayaking, and beach walks round out the activity list for guests who prefer to stay closer to shore. For travellers who want genuine island character alongside four-star comfort, without the price tag of Havelock's ultra-luxury properties, SeaShell Havelock is a well-regarded, dependable choice.

SeaShell, Neil — the beachfront resort on Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep), Andaman

Neil Island, Andaman & Nicobar

SeaShell, Neil

★★★★☆

Neil Island — Shaheed Dweep on the map now — is the small, slow one. It is a fraction of Havelock's size, and it has stayed largely agricultural. SeaShell, Neil is the most serious hotel on it. The group already runs SeaShell on Havelock and in Port Blair, so the standard is known: clean, well-serviced rooms, reliable food and staff who can actually organise an island day. That reliability matters more here than it does on the mainland, because the island has very little else in the way of infrastructure. Rooms are in low cottage-style blocks set back from the shoreline, among palms and open ground. They are simple and comfortable rather than grand. Air conditioning, hot water and a proper bed after a ferry crossing count for a lot. The island's three beaches are the reason to come. Laxmanpur is where the sunsets happen, and it has a long shallow shelf you can wade out over. Bharatpur is the snorkelling and glass-bottom-boat beach. Sitapur catches the sunrise. Natural Bridge, the coral arch at Howrah Bridge beach, is reachable at low tide. Getting here means a ferry — around an hour from Port Blair, or a short hop from Havelock — and that filter is exactly why the island still feels empty.

Exterior of Sinclairs Bayview Port Blair, a multi-storey hotel building framed by palm trees

Port Blair, Andaman & Nicobar

Sinclairs Bayview Port Blair

★★★★☆

Sinclairs Bayview sits on South Point, built down a sloping hillside that drops straight to the Bay of Bengal. It is one of the few hotels in Port Blair where most rooms genuinely face open water, and that view is the property's defining feature. The hotel holds 43 rooms and 3 suites across a series of stepped levels, a layout shaped directly by the hillside site. Rooms range from straightforward Deluxe options to sea-facing Premiere Rooms and Suites, up to the Valentine Room with its full-height glass windows on two sides, and a two-storey Premier Attic option for guests who want something different. Egyptian cotton sheets and proper bedding run through the room categories, a nicer touch than the four-star tier usually offers. The Bayview restaurant serves multi-cuisine meals on a garden deck that runs right along the sea, a genuinely pleasant spot to eat as the light changes over the water. Alto Espirito, the hotel's Spanish-themed bar, handles evenings with cocktails and snacks in a more elegant setting. An outdoor pool with its own sea view rounds out the property's main amenities. Corbyns Cove Beach and Port Blair's harbour attractions sit a short drive away, making Sinclairs Bayview a practical, well-placed base for exploring the city before heading onward to Havelock or Neil Island. For travellers who want a genuine sea view without paying five-star rates, this hillside property remains one of Port Blair's most consistently well-reviewed choices.

Vivanta Guwahati, a five-star hotel in the Khanapara area of Guwahati.

Guwahati, Assam

Vivanta Guwahati

★★★★★

Vivanta Guwahati is a Taj-group hotel on the eastern side of the city, near Khanapara. The rooms are modern and well finished, with Assamese patterns worked into the design. There is a spa, a bar, an all-day restaurant and a rooftop with city views. Staff know the region and arrange cars and guides. It sits on the road out toward Kaziranga and the Shillong turn-off, which makes onward drives straightforward, and it is a short run to the temples and the river. It is the premium choice for a city-based start to an Assam trip.

The colonial tea bungalow of Banyan Grove on the Gatoonga Tea Estate, Jorhat, seen across its lawn.

Jorhat, Assam

Banyan Grove, Jorhat

★★★☆☆

Banyan Grove is a colonial tea bungalow on the Gatoonga estate, a few kilometres from Jorhat, run as a small heritage hotel. It is a working planter's bungalow: a long low house with a deep veranda, set in a garden among the tea. The rooms are large and plain, in a period style, and the food is Assamese and planter's-club English. The estate around it is still picked and processed, and a walk through the gardens with the manager is easily arranged. It is a short drive to Nimati Ghat for the Majuli ferry and to the gibbon sanctuary. It is the premium option for a Jorhat stay that puts the tea garden first, at a gentler price than the manor.

The pitched-roof resort buildings of IORA - The Retreat set among lawns near Kaziranga.

Kaziranga, Assam

IORA – The Retreat, Kaziranga

★★★★☆

IORA – The Retreat is a resort set in tea gardens at Kohora, just outside Kaziranga's Central Range gate. The rooms are large and modern, in low blocks among lawns and tea. There is an outdoor pool, a spa, a gym and a good restaurant, and space for children to run. It is the closest full-service resort to the main safari gate, so mornings start with the shortest drive. It arranges every jeep and elephant safari, and has its own naturalists. It is the premium choice at Kaziranga for travellers who want a pool and a spa alongside the wildlife, rather than a stilted forest cottage.

The restored 19th-century Mughal haveli that houses Haveli Dharampura in Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi

Delhi, Delhi

Haveli Dharampura

★★★★☆

Haveli Dharampura is a restored 19th-century mansion in the lanes off Chandni Chowk, in the heart of Old Delhi. The building was a ruin until a six-year restoration brought back its carved sandstone balconies, jharokha windows and courtyards. The work won a UNESCO Asia-Pacific award. There are about thirteen rooms around two courtyards, each different, furnished with period pieces. A rooftop restaurant looks over the Jama Masjid and the old city. Kathak dance is performed in the courtyard most evenings. Heritage walks leave straight from the door. It is the way to stay inside Old Delhi rather than drive in and out of it, and it is the premium choice for a Delhi trip built around the old city.

The Grand View Hotel, a British-era heritage property in central Dalhousie.

Dalhousie, Himachal Pradesh

Grand View Hotel, Dalhousie

★★★☆☆

The Grand View has stood above the Dalhousie bus stand since 1906, and it is the town's heritage hotel. It is a long white building on the edge of the ridge, and the name is earned: the terrace and the front rooms look straight down the Chamba valley to the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal snows. The rooms are large and old-fashioned, in wood, with sitting areas and heaters. There is a restaurant, a bar, a lawn and a small pool. It is a short walk to the Mall, the churches and the walking circuits, and Khajjiar is a half-hour drive. It is the comfortable, characterful base for a night or two in Dalhousie.

premiumhotel
The terrace of Fortune Park Moksha overlooking the Dhauladhar range, McLeodganj.

Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh

Fortune Park Moksha, McLeodganj

★★★★☆

Fortune Park Moksha is a modern hotel in McLeodganj, upper Dharamshala, run by the Fortune group of ITC. The rooms are comfortable and well kept, and the better ones face the Dhauladhar range across the valley. There is an outdoor pool, a small spa, a sauna and a restaurant with Tibetan and Indian menus. Being in McLeodganj is the point. The Dalai Lama's temple, the monasteries, the Tibetan market and the cafes are a short walk, and the Bhagsu waterfall and the Triund trailhead are close. It is the premium option for a stay in the middle of Little Lhasa itself, rather than down the hill.

premiumresort
Span Resort & Spa on the banks of the Beas river near Manali.

Manali, Himachal Pradesh

Span Resort & Spa, Manali

★★★★☆

Span Resort sits on the bank of the Beas, on the road between Manali and Naggar, about fifteen kilometres from the town. The cottages are set in lawns and orchards along the river, and the sound of the water carries into the rooms. It has been run by the same family for decades, and it shows in the gardening and the service. There is a spa, an indoor pool, a fishing beat on the river, and a bonfire most evenings. It is a little way out of Manali, which trades the town's bustle for quiet and river frontage. The resort arranges the drives to Solang, the Atal Tunnel and Naggar. It is the premium choice for a Manali stay that puts the river and the calm first.

premiumhotel
The heritage facade of The Oberoi Cecil on Mall Road, Shimla.

Shimla, Himachal Pradesh

The Oberoi Cecil, Shimla

★★★★★

The Cecil is a heritage hotel at the quiet end of the Mall in Shimla, a few minutes' walk from the Ridge. It opened in the 1880s and kept its Raj-era bones: a tall glass-roofed atrium with a fire, wood floors, old photographs. The rooms are warm and traditional, and the valley-side ones look across the pines to the hills. There is a heated indoor pool, a spa, and a good restaurant. Being in the town is the point here, as against Wildflower Hall's forest. Christ Church, the Gaiety Theatre and the shops are a short walk, and the toy train station is close. It is the premium choice for a Shimla stay built around the colonial town itself.

premiumhotel
The timber facade of Kolahoi Green Heights, Gulmarg lit up at night against the snow.

Gulmarg, Kashmir

Kolahoi Green Heights, Gulmarg

★★★★☆

Kolahoi Green Heights is a modern four-star hotel in the middle of Gulmarg, about two hundred metres from the Gondola base station. It opened in 2017. The rooms are large and simply done, with wood floors, warm colours and big windows onto the meadow or the pines. There is a restaurant, room service and heating throughout. The location is the strength. The Gondola, the meadow, the church and the golf course are all a short walk, which matters in winter when the snow is deep and cars struggle. It is the premium option in Gulmarg for travellers who want a comfortable, central room rather than a full resort, and it works well for one or two nights in the mountains.
