Namchi is the district town of South Sikkim, on a ridge above the Rangit river, and it is known for two large hilltop monuments. On Samdruptse hill stands a forty-five-metre statue of Guru Padmasambhava, the teacher who brought Buddhism to the Himalayas, its foundation laid by the Dalai Lama in 1997. At Solophok, a short drive away, the Char Dham complex gathers full-scale replicas of the four great Hindu pilgrimage temples of India around a thirty-metre statue of Shiva. The town itself is small and orderly, with a flower-lined central mall. There is no hotel of any size here. Namchi is visited on a day trip from Ravangla, Pelling or Gangtok, usually alongside the Temi tea garden.
