Dalhousie At A Glance

Dalhousie is a colonial hill town in the Chamba district of Himachal, spread across five low hills at about two thousand metres. The British laid it out in the 1850s and named it after a viceroy. It has stayed small and quiet. Tin-roofed houses and Victorian churches sit among deodar and pine, with the Dhauladhar snow range filling the view to the south. Two walking circuits, Garam Sarak and Thandi Sarak, loop the ridges. The reason most people come is Khajjiar, half an hour away, a round green meadow with a small lake ringed by cedar forest that a Swiss envoy once compared to his own country. The old temple town of Chamba, down in the valley, is a longer day trip. Dalhousie is reached from Pathankot, about three hours away, and it pairs naturally with Dharamshala.

The Grand View has stood above the Dalhousie bus stand since 1906, and it is the town's heritage hotel. It is a long white building on the edge of the ridge, and the name is earned: the terrace and the front rooms look straight down the Chamba valley to the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal snows. The rooms are large and old-fashioned, in wood, with sitting areas and heaters. There is a restaurant, a bar, a lawn and a small pool. It is a short walk to the Mall, the churches and the walking circuits, and Khajjiar is a half-hour drive. It is the comfortable, characterful base for a night or two in Dalhousie.
