Luxury Majuli Tours

Majuli is the largest river island in the world, a low green sweep of paddy, wetland and village in the middle of the Brahmaputra. It is reached by ferry from Nimati Ghat near Jorhat, a crossing of about an hour. The island is the heart of Assamese Vaishnavism, the devotional tradition founded by the saint Srimanta Sankardev in the fifteenth century. Around twenty monasteries, called satras, are still active. They are not silent places. The monks farm, and they keep alive Sattriya dance, devotional song, and the making of large painted masks for religious plays. The island is also slowly shrinking, eaten at the edges by the river each flood season. There is no hotel of any size on Majuli. It is visited as a long day trip from Jorhat, and it rewards an unhurried one.
