About This Journey

Mumbai & Konkan Coast — Luxury

This route takes Mumbai and then looks past it. Four nights in the city cover the Fort district and the Elephanta Caves. One day heads south along the Konkan coast to Alibag and the sea fort of Murud-Janjira.

It is a good first trip to Maharashtra. It balances monuments with open air.

  1. 01

    The Konkan coast road

The day trip crosses the harbour by ferry or drives to Alibag, then continues about 50 km to Murud. The road runs between coconut palms and the sea.

  2. 02

    Murud-Janjira

The fort stands on a rock just off shore and is reached by a short boat ride. Boats do not run in rough weather, so we confirm access.

  3. 03

    Colonial Mumbai

A guided day through the Fort district gives you the Gateway of India and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.

  4. 04

    Elephanta Caves

A ferry crosses to the rock-cut temples of Elephanta, a UNESCO site.

Day 2 · Mumbai

Colonial Mumbai: Fort, Gateway and CST

A day in the old Fort district with a private guide. The area is a stretch of Victorian Gothic and Art Deco, built when Mumbai was Bombay. You see the Gateway of India, finished in 1924, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, a UNESCO World Heritage railway station. A walk through the Fort's lanes follows. We end with chai and sea air on the waterfront. Timings for interiors vary, so we confirm them on the day.

Day 3 · Mumbai

Alibag and Murud-Janjira Fort

A day on the Konkan coast. You cross the harbour by ferry or drive to Alibag, about two hours in all. From there the road runs south to Murud, about 50 km on. Murud-Janjira is a sea fort on a rock just off the shore, reached by a short boat ride. Boats do not run in rough weather or the monsoon, so we confirm access. Lunch is fresh seafood on the coast, and you return to Mumbai at night.

Day 4 · Mumbai

Elephanta Caves by Ferry

A ferry from the Gateway of India takes about an hour across the harbour. On Elephanta Island, steps climb to a group of rock-cut cave temples to Shiva. The Maheshmurti, a huge three-faced figure, is the centrepiece. The caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are generally closed on Mondays, and ferry times depend on the weather, so we confirm both. Back in the city, the evening is yours.

Arrive in Mumbai

Your driver meets you at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Mumbai is India's financial capital, and it never really stops. Check in and rest. In the late afternoon, walk the sweep of Marine Drive as the light turns gold. The curve of the bay at dusk is called the Queen's Necklace. Dinner is a first taste of the city's cooking.
