Eighth Bastion
Stay at Eighth Bastion, Fort Kochi — a CGH Earth boutique hotel on the old fort line, walkable to the Chinese fishing nets, on our Kerala tours.

Kochi → Munnar → Thekkady → Alleppey → Kovalam
About This Journey
The essential Kerala journey, seven nights long: Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey and a closing morning at Kovalam. Every stop on this route is here because it is genuinely one of the state's signature experiences, not filler between the famous ones.
Each day is built around a single defining scene: the spice quarter in Kochi, tea estates in Munnar, a spice plantation at Thekkady, backwater canals at Alleppey. It is the route most first-time visitors picture when they imagine Kerala, given proper time rather than a checklist pace.
Rather than combining sights, this itinerary gives Munnar's tea estates, Thekkady's spice plantation and Alleppey's canals each their own full day.
The opening day covers Fort Kochi's spice quarter and its Chinese-influenced waterfront, the starting point for understanding why this coast mattered to traders for centuries.
Taj Malabar Resort & Spa in Cochin, Scenic Munnar - IHCL SeleQtions, Spice Village at Thekkady and Punnamada Resort at Alleppey — each chosen for its own setting, not simply convenience.
Chapter Two — Where You'll Stay
Handpicked along your own route — not a hotel chain repeated city to city.

First, one night in Kochi
Stay at Eighth Bastion, Fort Kochi — a CGH Earth boutique hotel on the old fort line, walkable to the Chinese fishing nets, on our Kerala tours.

Next, 2 nights in Munnar
A family-run tea and cardamom estate resort near Munnar, with plantation walks, hill views, and just 18 rooms.

Next, 2 nights in Thekkady
A CGH Earth spice-garden resort on the edge of Periyar Tiger Reserve in Thekkady, with cottages, pools, and Ayurveda spa.

Finally, 2 nights in Alleppey
Stay at Punnamada Resort, Alleppey — a lakefront resort on Punnamada Lake with its own houseboat jetty and ayurveda centre, on our Kerala tours.
Chapter Three — Day by Day
6 of your 8days — the full itinerary follows below. Scroll to travel the route.

Day 2 · Kochi → Munnar
The drive up to Munnar takes about four hours and climbs the whole way. Rubber gives way to cardamom, then to tea. Stop at Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls when the monsoon has been kind. By the time you arrive the air is fifteen degrees cooler than Kochi.

Day 3 · Munnar
Munnar is tea, and has been since the 1880s. Spend the morning walking a working estate with a planter who can explain what you are looking at. The Tata Tea Museum houses the original rollers and a functioning miniature factory. Afternoon at Mattupetty Dam and Echo Point.

Day 4 · Munnar → Thekkady
Three and a half hours south through the Cardamom Hills. The road is good and the views are constant. You can smell the plantations before you see them. Thekkady sits on the edge of Periyar Tiger Reserve, so the last stretch runs through genuine forest.

Day 5 · Thekkady
Thekkady grows cardamom, pepper, clove, nutmeg and vanilla, often on the same hillside. A guided walk through a working plantation shows you how each one actually grows, which is rarely what people expect. Buy directly from the estate if you want the good stuff at the real price.

Day 6 · Thekkady → Alleppey
Roughly four hours west, dropping out of the Ghats and into the delta. It is one of the better transfer days in Kerala because the landscape changes completely twice over. You board your houseboat in the afternoon and spend the night moored out on Vembanad.

Day 7 · Alleppey
Houseboats cannot reach the small canals. A punted country boat can. You slip into channels barely wider than the hull, past coir workshops, toddy shops and school children rowing themselves home. This is the half-day that most travellers remember longest. Back on board for a late lunch.
Chapter Four — The Full Itinerary
Every day, start to finish — including the transfers the day-by-day chapter above skipped.

Kochi
Your driver meets you at Cochin airport. The road runs out to Fort Kochi, where four centuries of trade left their mark on one small peninsula. Walk the lanes on foot. St Francis Church, the Dutch Cemetery, the godowns of Jew Town still stacked with ginger and pepper. Evening is free for a Kathakali performance if you want one.

Kochi → Munnar
The drive up to Munnar takes about four hours and climbs the whole way. Rubber gives way to cardamom, then to tea. Stop at Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls when the monsoon has been kind. By the time you arrive the air is fifteen degrees cooler than Kochi.

Kovalam
A slow final morning on the beach. Trivandrum airport is only sixteen kilometres away, so there is no rush. If your flight is late, your driver can take you through the city — the Padmanabhaswamy temple and the Napier Museum are both worth the detour.
