Haridwar sits where the Ganges leaves the Himalayan foothills for the plains, about twenty-five kilometres from Rishikesh. It is one of the seven holiest towns in Hinduism, the gateway to the Char Dham pilgrimage routes further into the mountains. Its centre is Har Ki Pauri, a stepped riverside ghat where, by tradition, Vishnu himself left a footprint. Every evening, as the sun goes down, priests line the ghat for the Ganga aarti: brass lamps swung in unison, bells, and thousands of small leaf-boats of flowers and flame set adrift on the current. Away from the ghat, the town is a dense pilgrim bazaar of sweet shops, brass and ayurveda stores, and the Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi temples on hills either side of the river, reached by cable car. Most visitors take it in as a half-day from Rishikesh, but staying the night, in a room over the river, puts the aarti at the start and end of the day rather than in the middle of one.
